The Hotel Sol Cayo Coco is located on the northern coast of Cuba in the area called Jardines del Rey or Gardens of the Kings. Famed for its spectacular sea life and natural coral reefs, the area is idyllic and the very essence of what a Caribbean destination should be. Sadly, most visitors to the Sol Cayo Coco Hotel don´t sample the diving or snorkeling delights to be found just meters from the coast line. It is highly recommended you take one of the many offers to sample this underwater paradise. Opened in the early 90´s the Hotel Sol Cayo Coco has been a tourist mainstay on the Island from which its name is derived. Having been updated several times throughout those years, the hotel maintains itself as a respectable 4 star property situated in a location offering two tranquil beaches and generally excellent weather due to its northernmost latitude in comparison to the Cuban mainland. A causeway built to connect Cayo Coco and the other Jardines del Rey islands to the mainland, just a few kilometers long, means that visitors can either arrive by road or air. In 2002 the Jardines del Rey airport began to receive its first international flights of visitors to both Cayo Coco and the adjacent Cayo Guillermo. Popular with visitors who have been traveling around Cuba, Cayo Coco remains one of Cuba´s true paradisiacal destinations only slightly overtaken in recent years by the aforementioned Cayo Guillermo.

Guests arriving at Sol Cayo Coco are met by an immensely jovial group of bellboys who handle the check in procedure and take your cases to the rooms while you sip the free welcome cocktails. Upon arriving at your room whether it be sea view or garden view, you´ll find a smallish but adequate room which is tastefully decorated. Rooms were updated in 2010 and still have that “new” feeling. The terraces are large and equipped with some nice rattan furniture and perfect for relaxing in the evenings. Maids take great care of the cleanliness of the rooms and replace towels and linen daily. The minibar can be stocked by you from the downstairs store or the hotel can offer this for 5CUC per day.

The Sol Cayo Coco is situated on the corner of cove with two beaches in some impressive grounds covered with palm trees and exotic plants. Finding some shade is relatively simple especially at any one of the three large pools and, besides, there is an ample size kiddie’s pool specifically for younger guests. The Kids club has few different spots for the youngsters, notably a well equipped electronic games room near reception with Wii from Nintendo, PS3, Xbox with plenty of games. Adjacent to the pool snack bar there is a nice room for kids also meaning they can come out and eat whenever they wish. There´s also a large sandpit playground for smaller children located near the beach.

If you are not visiting Sol Cayo Coco with kids the resort offers some very tranquil areas of the large pools with plenty of shade plus, areas of the beach are basically empty due to their size. The hotel serves some international spirits although not top shelf alcohol served in 5 star hotels but, the offerings are adequate. If you are going as a couple or on a honeymoon getting one of the 4 suites available at the Sol Cayo Coco will certainly make you feel special. These enormous and beautifully decorated rooms have sea views and are on a remote end of the hotel. Very good choice if you are able to get one. Otherwise the hotel has 220 standard rooms of which 64 are sea view rooms. If you want a sea view room it would be better to book in advance because the hotel does allow guests to upgrade upon arrival and for 15 CUC per day most will usually be gone if you are not lucky.

The food served at the Arcada buffet is excellent with plenty of choices along with the opportunity to have several chefs cook your meat, pork and chicken just how you prefer. The cheese selection is particularly impressive as is the fresh fruit variety. The buffet is the main restaurant and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The hotel also allows guests to pre-book the excellent Don Diego A la carte restaurant which offers international cuisine and even Cuban lobster for a small supplement. Formal dress is required at the Don Diego. For those guests who enjoy a nice cocktail then there’s the Cuban Bar La Bodeguita or, 24 hours La Veranda Lobby Bar. Finally, for a nice change and to watch the stars, The beach restaurant offers some varied dishes and is worth at least one visit during your stay.

Overall, the Hotel Sol Cayo Coco is an excellent hotel and fitting its 4 star rating perfectly and a recent and welcome addition, Melia has begun allowing guests from Sol Cayo Guillermo and Sol Cayo Coco to visit either hotel making stays a lot more interesting. Guests can request the bracelet be attached to visit either hotel during their stay and this is highly recommended.
